If you’ve recently done a Windows update, you might notice some unexpected behaviour with your USB devices or even lose audio after a short break. Several reporters have faced this issue, and there’s a quick fix.
What Happened?
After the latest update, many USB input devices under “Human Interface Devices” in the Device Manager had a new setting enabled: “Turn off to save battery.” This option can cause devices like audio interfaces or USB mics to lose connection temporarily, especially during idle periods.
The Fix:
To prevent your devices from disconnecting, follow these steps to update your settings:
- Open Device Manager on your computer.
- Scroll down and find Universal Serial Bus (USB) controllers and Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click on each USB input device and select Properties.
- Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck the box that says “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
- Repeat this process for each device under USB controllers and Human Interface Devices – especially your audio devices, keyboard, and mouse.
After you adjust these settings, your USB devices should stay connected reliably.
