Heads Up: Windows Update May Disrupt Your USB Devices – Here’s How to Fix It

If you’ve recently done a Windows update, you might notice some unexpected behaviour with your USB devices or even lose audio after a short break. Several reporters have faced this issue, and there’s a quick fix.

What Happened?
After the latest update, many USB input devices under “Human Interface Devices” in the Device Manager had a new setting enabled: “Turn off to save battery.” This option can cause devices like audio interfaces or USB mics to lose connection temporarily, especially during idle periods.

The Fix:
To prevent your devices from disconnecting, follow these steps to update your settings:

  1. Open Device Manager on your computer.
  2. Scroll down and find Universal Serial Bus (USB) controllers and Human Interface Devices.
  3. Right-click on each USB input device and select Properties.
  4. Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck the box that says “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
  5. Repeat this process for each device under USB controllers and Human Interface Devices – especially your audio devices, keyboard, and mouse.

After you adjust these settings, your USB devices should stay connected reliably.
